Rule of Thirds – the nightclub/art union on level three of the art school at the University of Dundee seeking to provide sanctuary between classes during the day but host fashionable parties at night.
Interventions of the site are subconscious so the patrons of the nightclub will not be aware that they are being influenced. Through moving planes, change of material and colour, I have been sectioning off parts of the into different zones of the club, e.g. having the dance floor a different material, having platforms for seating areas, a stage for live music and using three rich colours to distinguish a hierarchy between the different areas.
Blue and red were chosen for their existing ties to the university, blue being Dundee and red being DJCAD. Blue being used in the main seating area due to its connotations with comfort and modern-day socialising, and a deep red being used in the more stylish live music zone to indulge in the lustrous ambience. Green is the main colour relating to part one of the “Object: Architecture” project used throughout the dance floor, central bar and entrance used in a way to incorporate the integrity of the building and not take away from it’s brutalist origins.
