Why is Interior Design seen as a lesser discipline to Architecture, and how does relate to the genders within these disciplines?

The topic of gender bias in design might be seen as a controversial subject even today, though the theme has been popularised since the 1980’s. It is my aim to highlight the deep issues of the industry and try to motivate other young women to not buckle under the suppression women have been experiencing for centuries. I am looking at the effects of this and if anything has been done to improve this today specifically in interior design and architecture.

The issue has been dissected into four separate parts and a role in showing the problem that still exists in the industry. This allows me to create clear objectives for each article and is also explained in the introduction of the publication. For the past century women have been robbed of their triumphs or have been turned away from the chance at studying the “masculine” architecture due to them being seen as inferior. Starting on a smaller scale at DJCAD, then moving to more famous architects and the broad issue of gender inequality in the industry.

I decided to use the styles of ICON as I feel the topics I have highlighted would fit in to their magazine. Their clientele would also be the target market I would be trying to attract as it is an architectural and cultural publication. The target audience of the series of articles is designers in need of inspiration or to open their eyes to the ground-breaking women who came before them. I want to highlight the issues of the industry and try to motivate other young women to not buckle under the suppression women have been experiencing for centuries. I wish to pull back the figurative curtain and give the women in the architecture and design disciplines a public platform to showcase their work.

I find gender bias an exciting subject to explore, as a woman I have faced many of the prejudices I am discussing in the series of articles. It is also a subject I have explored in written pieces in previous years’ coursework. When I start applying for jobs after my fourth year, I hope to be seen as an equal to the people I will be competing against.

The dissertation is named after a personal encounter with an architecture lecturer who is a family friend after dropping out of the architecture course. His reply to the news of me leaving and joining interior design was to insult the subject and saying I could do better. This has inspired me and fuelled the subject of my dissertation.
