RSA - Home Sweet Home // HouseHold

Tasked with a brief to revolutionise the home while working from home in a four month lockdown was a difficult assignment.

I developed "HouseHold" - a system for ageing-in-place to improve long term placement in houses. It is a retrofitting solution for moving walls so the house evolves with the family as they grow.

With the construction industry wasting up to 28% of their materials in the UK, something needs to be done to increase the lifespan of existing homes.

I interviewed four couples at different stages of their life (no children, new homeowners, with children still living at home, and retired) to determine what they would want if they were to stay in their houses from the point of purchase. Space was the biggest issue and new rooms being needed as time progresses was a main factor.

"HouseHold" is a wall system on rails which can be pulled and locked to create extra rooms as the residents would need them.
The focus is on years full of life rather than life full of years.
It provides a flexible solution to homeowners struggling with a lack of space. It moves with the resident's desires as it is adaptable and it can be implemented in existing homes through retrofitting.

Staying in one place can reduce suburban sprawl as it will reduce the amount of homes being created in the outskirts of town as less people will be moving.

The final slide shows different examples for the houses to be orientated.
